Damiano Latini from Italy has developed a "super seat" using virtual reality technology
Italian furniture brand Damiano Latini collaborates with American designer Nicholas Baker. Design a stackable integrated Super Chair using emerging virtual reality technology.
Nicholas said, "To create a classic, many conditions are needed, including good marketing, clever business strategy, unique design, and a little bit of luck." His recent collaboration with Damiano Latini is a good example.
Super Chair attracts people's attention with its sculptural design and unique silhouette. The integrated chair body is made of 100% recycled polypropylene and fully developed and designed using virtual reality 3D modeling technology.
Nicholas has the personality of an inventor, and this time he uses virtual reality technology as a method to bridge the gap between traditional sketching and CAD modeling, ultimately making design work more efficient.
In the past six years, Nicholas has been using virtual reality technology in practice, mainly through a program called Gravity Sketch, which has been very helpful for his design process, most notably in the areas of mixed reality and product iteration speed.
Mixed reality allows designers to optimize the scale and proportion of their designs, such as being able to project a chair in the studio space as if it were a real object in the studio. Designers can walk around the space and observe the model. This technology has changed the game rules of traditional design, especially for chair design. Nicholas said he would build a rough functional prototype and overlay a virtual reality model on top, so he could sit down with headphones on and feel like he's sitting in a real product.
Nicholas said, 'For Super Chiar, we must ensure that its thinner surface has a stable structure and conforms to ergonomics.'. Although virtual reality technology still lacks some engineering parameters, with the advancement of technology, one day we may even no longer need to use mice and keyboards. Because in virtual reality technology, creation can be done by hand, our design and product iteration speed is 10 times faster than mice and keyboards, which can shorten research and design time
The minimalist silhouette of cantilever seats has been appealing to designers and consumers for the past century. Of course, there are also many cantilever or "S" shaped seats, but the Super Chair has added diagonal lines to its outline. From the front, the seat appears as a whole, forming a sharp contrast with the side. This unique design has a distinct simplicity and overall balance.
With the full support of Damiano Latini, Nicolas ultimately turned his ideas into reality. At the same time, he also received support from SPM SpA company to use the latest plastic manufacturing technology on the seats.
Super Chair uses SPM SpA molding technology and its main material is 100% recycled polypropylene. Polypropylene is a widely used thermoplastic polymer that is durable and long-lasting. The polymer component is obtained from scraps and industrial waste recycling without using petrochemical resources, achieving a high degree of environmental protection.
The selection of materials is only a part of it, and designers usually do not have the final decision-making power over the source of materials. Nicholas said, "I personally strive to incorporate environmentally friendly and sustainable materials into my design whenever possible. I enjoy designing products like Super Chair, where the design approach is challenging and the materials are environmentally friendly; Stackable for easy transportation, reducing costs and future storage area. Integrated design improves production efficiency, avoids potential failures in other components, and eliminates the need for product installation and maintenance
